Because our true citizenship is in heaven, a dangerous temptation often creeps into the hearts of Christians: the temptation of political isolationism. We look at the brokenness, the mudslinging, and the compromise of the political arena, and we say, “I am not of this world, so I will simply step away and vote for Jesus.” But as Pastor Greg Lauri once noted, Jesus does not need your vote. He has already been exalted far about any earthly rule, authority, or power. Jesus doesn’t need our ballots to protect communities, uphold justice, and safeguard the common good.
Scriptures shows us that while we are citizens of a heavenly kingdom, God has intentionally stationed us as temporary residents in an earthly nation. Voting is not a matter of salvation, but it is fundamentally a matter of gospel stewardship, love for our neighbors, and civic obedience.
Jesus tells a parable about a steward who began to take advantage of his master because his master had been gone for a long time. He forgot what he had been asked to do and took advantage of the situation. Unfortunately, when the master returned, he pronounced harsh punishment for the unfaithful steward. I believe it can be applied to us and our failure to vote.
